User Filament Policy [in progress]

This page is to provide users with a definitive policy on filament usage at the AMS and the use of user-provided filament.

General Filament Policy

All school project courses (AE 3610, AE 4610) must use AMS filaments; do not bring your own. See Advanced FDM 3D Printing Materials for options. If filament is purchased erroneously, it will fall on the AMS if the material will be accepted or not.

All personal projects must use AMS filaments; do not bring your own.

All research labs and clubs must use AMS filaments if on the following list of generally stocked materials. Exceptions can be made as specified below.

Generally Stocked Materials

Generally stocked FDM (Bambu Labs X1C Original Prusa MK4) materials:

  • PETG (main material, consumer queue)

  • PLA

  • TPU

  • ABS

  • ASA

  • PA12-CF10

  • PC-CF

Generally stocked Consumer Resin (Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 16K) materials:

  • (Resin): Sunlu 14K grey resin

  • (Resin): Anycubic clear blue abs like

Currently, the Formlabs machines are at End of Life and more material is not being purchased. We do still have stock available for use for some materials; additional use is at the expense of the research lab or club. This may include a Form 3 bedarrow-up-right and resin cartridge.

Policy Exceptions

Clubs: Additional filament may be donated to the AMS general pool if a material we don't stock is desired. If your club plans to use several spools of any material that is not PETG, please donate some additional material of the AMS-recommended brand to help offset the large amount used.

Research: If a material not on the generally stocked material is desired, it can be designated as Lab-specific filament to be used only by a given lab. If this is desired, make sure it is labeled on all sides of the material, the date given to the AMS clearly indicated, and it is made clear to the mentors on shift when provided. The material can be retrieved during any open hours of the AMS and must be retrieved or have date updated 1 month from the date listed. If the material is not picked up, labeling will be removed and the material will be added to general AMS use pool. When submitting prints to use the lab-provided material, be sure to include a comment on the material type and where the material is stored in the AMS.

  • Most materials: Polymaker, Fiberon

  • 2nd choice for most materials: Elegoo

  • PC-CF: Priline

  • Prusa Prusament

  • Bambu Lab
