Lab Rules & Procedures
Lab Rules
General Rules
The AMS Composites Lab is to be used for fabrication and composites purposes with our machinery or table space. Any bookings must reflect this purpose.
A lead will create meetings, unlock the room for the group, but all users present should be trained in the composites lab onboarding. The lead must always be there to oversee the members.
If no composites activity is happening at all and a lead has already unlocked the room for a shift, then users are only allowed to be in the room without a lead if they are only supervising an over cure.
“It is the responsibility of the Leads to uphold the Lab's rules and procedures for their members and themselves. Leads must be supervising when members are using the Lab. Each Lead must complete an in-person training at the Composites Lab in order to be given access to the Lab's calendar for bookings. With this, Leads will be responsible for booking meetings in the Lab. To be a Lead, you must apart of the your organization's leadership or responsible for a project (for example, REs, Chief Engineers, etc.).”
Do not take AMS equipment out of the room.
The room should be cleaner after than when you enter it.
No items should be left in the lab, they will be periodically disposed of.
For any special cases (IE drying), the Teams should be notified, and the AMS will selectively approve. A note should be placed on the item with the lead’s contact info and when the item will be picked up.
Only the Leads of a group should be unlocking / using the door code. If an emergency unlock is needed, please contact the AMS on Teams.
Safety - Always exercise caution when using lab equipment.
The lead is responsible for making sure the group follows all safety rules and regulations.
Every user of the lab should have attended the Composites Lab safety training to use the lab.
The oven must be supervised at all times.
Proper PPE should be worn during all work. If any PPE is low on stock it should be reported to the AMS immediately so we can stock more.
Trainings
There will either be on-demand trainings or video resources for new groups rolling out in the future.
Consequences
The AMS will be conducting checks on bookings to ensure all lab procedures are being followed.
If rules are violated, a warning may be issued or information will be passed along to our faculty advisor, Dr. Kelly Griendling.
Consequences can include loss of lab access for the entire group, faculty determined consequences, or escalation to the Dean of Students.
Bookings
Bookings are on Outlook using the “AMS Composites Lab Bookings” calendar.
Book times your group will come to.
(instead of reserving an entire day, reserve a general time chunk).
You can leave for short activities as long as you return.
The oven must be turned off if no one is in the room.
All groups are allowed 1 recurring meeting a week guaranteed.
If your group cancels its recurring meeting for a specific day, please cancel that booking.
Other recurring events weekly can be booked, but if the space gets busy, we will ask that you share or yield your non-primary weekly meeting time.
If you really need to use a booking time that has been claimed or have any questions reach out to the lead of the booking in question to work something out.
The max meeting time is 24 hours.
Booking Format (outlook calendar)
Make sure your planned booking time follows the booking rules and doesn’t conflict with someone else.
Write an overview of your lab usage in the title (IE: AMS - Airfoil Making)
If you are only using the table or only using the oven you can write it in the title so others may share the space with you.
Very Important: Make sure the meeting is set for the “AMS Composites Lab Booking” Outlook Calendar”
Write your Lead’s information in the description of the meeting
Name, Email, Phone Number
Meeting Bookings format on Outlook Calendar (Make sure this is for the "AMS Composites Lab Bookings" Calendar)
Teams / Communication
Use the “general” channel to chat and discuss with other users. Please use this as the #1 form of communication if you need other users to see.
If the lab is missing supplies, please use Teams to request new ones, especially PPE.
There will be announcements sent out in the teams announcements channel so please turn your notifications on.
For private operational stuff, message Truman on teams
For technical composites questions message the general chat in the teams if possible to see if any other group may also know a workaround.
