Table Saw

Information:

The table saw is a tool used to make precise straight cuts in various types of wood. It It consists of a circular saw blade that protrudes through a flat table, allowing users to guide materials for accurate rip, cross, and angled cuts. Equipped with safety features like a blade guard and riving knife, the table saw is highly versatile, making it a staple in woodworking shops for tasks ranging from simple straight cuts to more complex, precise joinery. The AMS table saw is a SawStop that is a high quality system with innovative safety technology.

Safety Basics:

The table saw can be a very dangerous tool if it is not used properly while being operated. The following precautions must be taken to minimize the risk of an accident:

  • Personal Safety:

    • Wear safety glasses (provided by the AMS)

    • Tie back hair, avoid loose clothing

  • Environmental Safety:

    • Activate ventilation prior to use

    • Keep table saw clear of any materials

    • Sweep up excess sawdust after operation

  • Operational Safety:

    • Have a trained AMS mentor supervise machine use

    • Use push sticks while pieces are being cut

    • Don't stand directly behind the material being cut

How to Use:

The table saw is typically stored with the saw retracted fully into the table. The rotating handle under the table (shown below) allows for the saw blade to be moved up and down for preferred material.

1) Position the material flat against the table and increase the height of the blade so it is about a quarter inch above the part being cut

2) Adjust the rip fence (the adjustable guide attached to the table saw that runs parallel to the blade) for a stable straight cut with the part resting against its face

3) Turn the machine on by switching the button up and wait for the light to turn solid green. To turn the saw on, pull the large red tab outwards towards you.

4) Carefully use a push stick (a stick with a handle and grips used to keep your hands a safe distance from the blade) located in the drawer to the left of the table saw to feed the part into the blade and maintain a steady amount of pressure until the part is fully cut

5) Push the material all the way through the balde in order to prevent push back and make sure to turn the blade off before picking material up

Make sure to retract blade back into the table once it is done being used.
